杨雄里长期从事视觉神经机制的研究,研究领域涉及色觉的心理物理、视网膜电图、视网膜信息处理等方面
他在水平细胞所接收的光感受器信号及其相互作用等方面有新的发现,修正了传统观念,此项研究获得1989年中国科学院自然科学奖一等奖;他与合作者首先报道视杆—视锥间电耦合因背景光而增强,在国际上被列为20世纪80年代视网膜研究中的突出成果,他率先发现了视觉信号在暗中受压抑的新现象(暗压抑效应),并对网间细胞及几种神经调质参与的机制进行了系统而细致的分析
1989年、1996年分获中国科学院自然科学一等奖、二等奖;2006年获教育部自然科学一等奖,上海市自然科学一等奖
